Brooklyn, NY – The ASA Brooklyn Avengers baseball team open the 2019 NJCAA Region XV Championships on Wednesday, May 1st 2019 against regional rivals Monroe Mustangs at New Rochelle.
With the Avengers starting post-season play, they now look to tighten their rotations after playing 11 different pitchers in their last 4 games against the Monroe Mustangs. In game 1 of the best of 5 series, the Avengers had #15 Alexis Saldana as the opening pitcher. With Saldana pitching, the Mustangs did not score a run until the 6th inning. In the 7th inning, a miscommunication between the fielders gave 2 additional runs to the Mustangs. The Avengers had a final opportunity in the 9th inning, with the bases fully loaded and at-bat. The Avengers were able to secure a run and had another opportunity to tie the game with 2 Avengers on-base. However, a crucial call went against the Avengers and game 1 ended in a loss 1-3.
In game 2, the Avengers started a different pitcher in #16 Mauricio Mendez. In the first inning, the Avengers gave up 2 runs to the Monroe Mustangs. In the 2nd inning, the Mustangs made a few mistakes at pitching and allowed the Avengers to even the score. The Avengers led 4-3 by the end of the 5th inning. In the 6th inning, the Avengers changed pitchers twice and allowed the Mustangs to score 4 runs. In the 3rd game, the Avengers opened with #33 Sammy Cuevas as pitcher. Although the Avengers scored the first inning, the Mustangs bounced by scoring runs in 5 consecutive innings. Although the Avengers scored 2 runs in the 7th, they ultimately felled to the Monroe Mustangs.
