New Rochelle, NY – The ASA Avengers men's basketball team travelled to New Rochelle to play in the Monroe College Invitational. The Avengers first match in the invitational was on Thursday November 29th 2018 against College of Central Florida. After Central Florida defeated ASA Silver Storm earlier this month, the Avengers looks to avenge their Miami brothers.
The Avengers came out with an early run in the beginning of the first half, but had a difficult time capitalizing on that early lead. The Avengers had a hard time getting good ball movement, and at the end of the first half, the game was tied 31-31. In the second half, the Avengers was able to move the ball better, but after Avengers Center, #15 Miguel Simon, got called for a technical foul at 6:04 remaining in the second half up 65-56, the momentum seemed to shift to Central Florida.
With 2:33 left in the game, Central Florida captured the lead for the first time in the game 71-69. However, with a number of key defensive stops, the Avengers was able to tie the game at 74-74. The Avengers called a timeout at 28 seconds remaining in the game, and drew up a play for #5 Rob Terrero for a game winning 3 pointer at the 5 second mark. With Rob's game winner, the Avengers won the game 77-74.
"It was competitive, I felt like we were being very selfish for most of the game," said men's basketball head coach, Devonne Martinez. In the second half, it felt like a heavyweight bout. They're a powerhouse team in Florida. However, we never lost confidence in ourselves."
"Although we lost the rebound battle, we got key rebounds in the end of the game. We drew a play up that I felt my team could execute well, and they were able to walk away with a win."
With the win, the Avengers are currently 6-0 for the season and look to play in the second match of the invitational tomorrow, November 30th 2018, against Baltimore City Community College.
