ASA Avengers Football Open the 2018 Season Against the Nassau Lions

Garden City, NY – The ASA Avengers football team, ranked #12 in the NJCAA pre-season polls, travelled to Mitchel Athletic Complex to open the 2018 football season against the Nassau Lions.  Led by newly promoted head coach, Coach Cal, Avengers look to have the 2018 Avengers be a defensive minded team compared to the offensive-minded 2017 Avengers.

The defense was loose in the first quarter and the Avengers missed open field tackles as the Nassau Lions got off to a quick start.  The Nassau Lions were able to score a touchdown in the first 3 min 45 seconds of the 1st quarter.  It was followed by a second touchdown with 7:31 left in the first.  After the Nassau Lions led 14-0, the defense got better as the game went on.

The Avengers ran the play-action pass and was able to score two touchdowns for the Avengers, one in the first and one early in the second.  Cortez Ervin, who plays tight end for the Avengers, ran across the middle for both plays and scored.  On the second touchdown, Cortez Ervin was able to catch a diving pass.  However, both times the Avengers missed the extra point and the Avengers were down 14-12 with 11:23 remaining in the 2nd.

As the Avengers defense kicked in, both teams were unable to score a touchdown for the rest of the game.  Late in the fourth, the Avengers offense was able to gain momentum.  With 0:52 remaining in the 4th, the Avengers were in the 1 yard line, however, the Avengers missed the kick and the game ended in a 14-12 loss.
